Dogs.
Hey everyone!
I am a self proclaimed Dog Snob. I love dogs and the sport of showing dogs. Anything involved with dogs, I love. Now I say Snob because I prefer purebreds. Mutts are great, I have several but my heart is pedigreed. This is also why I love being a pet groomer, getting to be hands on with so many different breeds and making them look as close as I can to their breed type is a thrill for me.
I have always wanted to breed/show purebred dogs. Westminster is like the Super Bowl for me, I love reading about animal genetics, and raising puppies. But getting a breeder of quality dogs to give a virtual 'noobie' like me a puppy in the my chosen breed is nearly impossible.
Now my breed of choice is the Poodle. Big or small I love them all but trying to find a healthy, well bred companion Toy Poodle is nearly impossible, almost as impossible as getting one from a show breeder.
I was heavily involved with animal rescue for many years and I will always lend a hand to a dog in need. I will always advocate spay and neuter as a responsible pet owner decision.
But.
I want to breed dogs.
Now hear me out, when I say, I want to breed dogs, it's not for profit. I know good a well that a responsible/respectable breeder makes nill on a litter of puppies. When I say, I want to breed dogs, it's because I want people like me who want a well bred companion to be able to find a puppy. Because believe me, right now if you search Toy Poodle Breeders on the internet you will find 20% show breeders who have a two year waiting list for pups and 80% 'puppy mill' breeders who want $3000 for their Micro Mini Tea Cup Tiny Toy Poodle.
It's fucking frustrating.
Where are those in-between breeders? The ones who health test and know their genetics. Where are the breeders who show as a hobby and may not have top winning dogs but still nice healthy, good looking puppies? Where are the true hobby breeders?
I think there is such a divide because of the "animal rights"/animal welfare movement. Like I said spaying and neutering is the best choice for Joe Schome and his beloved Pookie but with in the last 5 years there is no longer a 'over population' of dogs in North America. Granted there are parts of the US that are more saturated then others but with all of the transporting and importing of homeless animals it's just not a big of an issue as it has been in the past. Now it;s come down to educating the next generation on responsible dog ownership.
But I digress.
Not everyone wants a mixed breed. Not everyone wants to rescue an adult dog. Not everyone wants to take a chance on the unknown with a shelter dog.
How do we get back healthy, purebred companion dogs? I believe it's with hobby breeders and owners who just want to produce awesome, quality companions. I hope one day I can be the breeder I've always wanted to be.
Ta for now,
Kayla
